The central banks' turnaround

September was a positive month for most stock exchanges worldwide. At the same time, the European and US central banks once again had to pull on their monetary-policy joysticks.

A tug-of-war is ongoing

August was a turbulent month in the stock markets. Trump's escalation of the trade war with China and, not least, tug-of-war with his own central bank helped to maintain the excitement.

A sense of déjà vu

July ended with an upturn for many of the world's stock exchanges. Yet again, Brexit, the trade war between the USA and China, and the companies' quarterly reports stole the headlines.

Strong summer sprint

Following weak developments in May, the stock markets experienced a strong end to the first half-year in June. Yet again, it was smoke signals from the central banks that contributed to the change in mood.

Escalating trade war

Following a sharp upturn in the global stock markets since the correction in December, fear spread among investors in May. Yet again, Trump's energetic tweeting started the unrest.

Highs and Trump

The strong upturn in the stock market continued in April, with a new high for global shares towards the end of the month. At the same time, Trump is now warning of increased tariffs for China.

Strong first quarter

March was another good month for the stock markets and was also the end of a strong quarter. The upturn is to a large extent ascribed to a turnaround by the US central bank.

An optimistic track

The February stock markets continued on the same optimistic track as in January. At the same time, global macro figures are continuing to weaken.

Strong start to 2019

January started in the best possible way, with a sharp upturn. The fear gripping the world's stock markets was gone – greatly aided by expectations of a pause in interest-rate hikes.

Lower growth

December saw a weak ending to a turbulent year. The expectations of less central bank stimulation and lower growth in 2019 make it easy to forget the drivers that could create an upturn.
